'GEOGRAPHIC,' BUICK SEARCH FOR TOP FAMILY

General Motors Corp.'s Buick division is teaming with National Geographic for the "Family of the Century" contest. The nationwide school-based competition, reaching 25,000 social studies teachers, asks for student essays nominating their families for excelling in community volunteerism. One grand-prize-winning family will get a Buick Century sedan and a vacation at Walt Disney World. Teachers are invited to compete in a separate contest based on how they incorporated the promotion into the classroom to win a behind-the-scenes trip for two to National Geographic's headquarters. Teachers also can win 10 second-place $500 gift certificates for National Geographic education merchandise. The promotion was handled in-house.

Jack Daniel Distillery expects more than 20,000 people to attend the 11th annual World Championship Invitational Barbecue Oct. 23 in Lynchburg, Tenn. The event will feature barbecue teams from around the world competing in categories including poultry, beef brisket, whole hog, pork ribs, pork shoulder, dessert and barbecue sauce required to contain Jack Daniel's whiskey. Among other activities at the free event: a country dog contest, butt bowling, rolling pin toss and free tours of the distillery.

OneNet Communications signed as title sponsor of the Race Day Festival July 31 to celebrate the yearlong countdown until the opening of the Kentucky Speedway in Florence, Ky. Racing fans will get a sneak preview of the track, plus entertainment including virtual reality racing, racing for kids in the Speed Pedal 150 and the chance to meet racing champions including Danny Sullivan, Bobby Unser and Darrell Waltrip in the One Book Autograph Pavilion. Promotion Marketing Association announced the election of John Zamoiski as chairman and president of the industry group, succeeding Paul Theroux. Mr. Zamoiski is president of Promotion Development Group, New York.

PepsiCo is the official beverage sponsor of the 11-city "Victory Tour" of the U.S. Women's World Cup soccer team. The beverage giant's Aquafina water will be the lead brand in the sponsorship, which also includes AllSport, Mountain Dew, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi and Pepsi One.
