for its yearly list of "100 Best Companies to Work For," Fortune relies on data from the Great Place to Work Institute. The criteria fall into two camps:

Trust Index (2/3 of total score)

An employee survey that examines credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie within the company

Culture Audit (1/3 of total score)

A management questionnaire asks about employee demographics. It also looks at benefits and perks. An open-ended survey gives the companies a chance to explain their office cultures.
