New from Japan Publicity Inc. is a $24.95 paperback directory called Art as 1: Japanese Professional Illustrators, Vol. 1. The book features the work of 43 Japanese artists whose styles run the gamut from pastels to 3-D CG characters. We open with the latter, a figure called Pu-chan, created by digital artist Hiroshi Yoshii, who says his characters are the result of "a harmonious combination of beauty, ludicrousness and humor." In the PDF is work by: (2) Takashi Akiyama; (3) Reichel Miyao; (4) Radical Suzuki; (5) Ryuji Kawano; (6) Tsuyoshi Nagano; and (7) Hiroshi Watanabe. The book is presently available only to ad agencies and qualified art buyers; it will be distributed worldwide by IPG in September. See www.artas1.com for more.
