BOOKS: The Art of Broadway

Published on .

A Solomonic Solution
According to Chronicle Books (www.chroniclebooks.com), theatrical manager and producer Steven Suskin, author of A Must See!: Brilliant Broadway Artwork, searched through rare archives to compile 50 years' worth of theatrical posters, many of which haven't been seen since the shows in question closed. Artists represented in the 175 color images in this engrossing $22.95 paperback include Al Hirschfeld, Norman Rockwell, Peter Arno, Alberto Vargas, William Steig, Edward Gorey, Ludwig Bemelmans, Hilary Knight, James Thurber and Tom Morrow. The lead image here is from a 1936 production, and, as Suskin notes, "Jimmy and Ethel had both been promised top billing, resulting in this Solomonic crisscross."
