New from Chronicle Books is the downscale delight known as Weirdo Deluxe: The Wild World of Pop Surrealism and Lowbrow Art, by Matt Dukes Jordan, who's not only a journalist (as well as a poet, actor, painter and standup comic) but he played a journalist on the TV series Key West. How cool is that? Anyway, as the publisher notes about this $24.95 paperback, which boasts 180 color illustrations covering the work of 23 artists, " 'Lowbrow' it may be called, but high profile best describes the cultural impact of this contemporary art movement. Found everywhere from wine labels and high-end bar accessories to major motion pictures, the visibility of this dynamic work has rapidly expanded in the last few years to worldwide recognition and acclaim." How true. And aren't we all that much better for it? We're leading here with a Mark Ryden piece, and in the PDF showcase are Eric White's "Expulsion From Paradise," Gary Taxali's "Speed" and Owen Smith's pulp boxing drama, "Angel." See for more.
