BOOKS: The Art of Modern Rock Rocks Out

Published on .

Funk in the Trunk
If you're looking for a stupendous holiday gift book of the hefty coffee table variety, be sure to check out The Art of Modern Rock: The Poster Explosion, from Chronicle Books, www.chroniclebooks.com. Written by rock art historians Paul Grushkin and Dennis King, this $60 whopper is 492 pages of mostly stunning work from some 350 artists, beautifully organized and designed by San Francisco's Flux, with art direction by co-author King. Chronicle calls the book "the first and last word on the finest rock concert posters of the past 15 years," and after paging through this wonder, we're not about to argue. It even has its own website at www.artofmodernrock.com. The poster seen at right is by Ron Donovan, and is not endorsed by the Republican Party.
