BOOKS: Playboy Has a Helmut Newton Retrospective

Hef Meets Helmut
For nearly 30 years, the late, great Helmut Newton shot pictorials for Playboy, many of which are now available for extended delectation in Playboy: Helmut Newton, a $40 hardcover from Chronicle Books. Chapter titles like these tell it all: "Kinski Exposed" (that's Nastassia, not Klaus); "Real Dolls" ("Photos of lifelike $5,000 custom-made dolls that were shot for Playboy but found too odd to place in the magazine," according to Chronicle); "Helmut's Angels"; "Big Lady, Little Lady"; "Prussian Guard"; "At Your Service"; "Newton's Physiques"; and "Tomorrow's Turn-ons." This collection, the publisher assures us, "has the distinction of featuring photographs personally selected by Hugh Hefner," who was no doubt smoking a pipe and wearing pajamas at the time. We lead this showcase with a "physique" from September 1976. See the PDF and for more.
