At the School of Visual Arts Gallery in New York, through Dec. 11, is "Sagmeister: Made You Look," a comprehensive exhibition of works by Stefan Sagmeister www.sagmeister.com, perennially billed as a "renegade" graphic designer, who also teaches in the MFA design department at SVA. The show, which has traveled around Europe and Asia, includes Sagmeister's well-known work for musicians like Lou Reed (at right), the Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Aerosmith, Pat Metheny and Talking Heads, among others — along with new work for the Guggenheim Museum's Hugo Boss Prize, and a billboard project called "Trying to Look Good Limits My Life" for the Art Grandeur Nature 2004 contemporary art biennial in Paris. A Sagmeister sampler is seen in this PDF showcase.

Also in this showcase are some classic ads from legendary copywriter Ed McCabe — he of "It takes a tough man to make a tender chicken" for Perdue, and Hebrew National's "We answer to a higher authority" fame — who was recently honored with SVA's 2004 Masters Series Award. A retrospective exhibition of McCabe's work, titled "Strong Words," is on view at the Visual Arts Museum through Dec. 4. McCabe, interestingly, is the first writer to receive this SVA graphics award. Cha-ching! See www.schoolofvisualarts.edu for more on both shows.
