THE SPEC DECK: Fighting Back Against Domestic Abuse

Published on .

Taking On Abuse
Cramer-Krasselt/Chicago writer Jim Korakis (dakorakis@yahoo.com) explains, "At the suggestion of creative director Scott Wild, my partner, Vince Soliven (www.vincesoliven.com), and I created a pro bono poster campaign for a local organization that offers aid and shelter to victims of domestic abuse. The concepts have yet to be presented to the Friends, but with any luck they'll be produced. We're hoping to eventually shoot these, and we have a photographer lined up who's expressed interest. Unfortunately, we've had a little trouble locating child models. Parents we've approached are reluctant to have their children portrayed in this manner. I understand their concern, but if it means possibly saving the life of another child, I'd have to say it's worth it." In the meantime, the spec seen here are stock photos with black eyes and other details added in Photoshop. "When we finalized the concept and the various executions, Vince spent a heroic amount of time locating just the right shots," says Korakis. "The darkness and shadowing in the images, I believe, help to reinforce the overall sense of dread, fear and isolation, which are some of the emotions that prevent victims from speaking up or coming forward."
