Insani Flush?
This week's Rate the Ad. Well, since we did a sewer last week, let's continue the theme and do a toilet. Here's a videogame ad, found in Electronic Gaming Monthly, that's hard not to notice, even during the most brain-glazed of page flipping. Rate it on a six-degree taste scale of excellence on the PrintCritic Sweet Meter, with 5 being the top score: 5 Very Sweet, 4 Sweet, 3 Semi-Dry 2 Dry, 1 Extra Dry, 0 Sour. And feel free to write in your comments, about the art direction, the copy, the concept, the brand, whatever. Click here to play

A Perfect Circle?
Last week's Rate the Ad. This Orbit gum gape-mouthed sewer job garnered a load of snide remarks about Oreos, oral sex and blowup dolls, but overall it fared pretty well on the PrintCritic Sweet Meter, with a 51/49 Good/Bad ratio, comparing the top half of the meter to the bottom half. Moreover, its single biggest score was a Sweet, and 35% of respondents gave it an unqualified thumbs up. And you're a tough crowd; witness the 21% goose egg, representing people who more or less found the ad very noticeable for all the wrong reasons. Here's the breakdown.

5 Very Sweet 12%
4 Sweet 23%
3 Semi-Dry 16%
2 Dry 13%
1 Extra Dry 15%
0 Sour 21%

And here are some of our fave comments.

5 One of the best print ads I've ever seen. Period.

3 I honestly want to like this one better, 'cause it's nicely executed — simple, provokes thinking — but what condition does she have that the gum will cure? MTA mouth?

0 I find this ad unappealing and stupid.

1 Maybe Orbit can clean my drains and my toilet, too.

2 Stop stealing ideas from student exhibitions, they're not that good.

5 This is so stupid it's great! Very memorable. Wish I'd done it.

3 Clever idea, but the execution is a little flat compared to the campy visual style of Orbit's TV.

5 I know this feeling. This ad hits right on the mark. I even bought the gum!

1 I think it's a waste of a model, ink and paper.

3 Exactly what has this girl put in her mouth recently?

5 A perfectly executed job. From the concept to the photography, all a smooth flow.

2 Nice idea, poor execution. I thought it was some sort of cookie. Once I figured it out, the delayed payoff wasn't worth it.

4 I'm for anything that makes me think of oral sex.

0 I don't know what this is, but it's gross.

1 I'm a woman, and this ad pisses me off. How much do you want to bet this will take on another life of its own with more than one sick porno freak?

1 Makes me think of those horrible open-mouthed plastic dolls they sell at sex shops.

0 Another sexist ad created to demean women. A "man hole" indeed!

0 Dirty mouth? Try washing it with toothpaste and a brush. Terrible ad. A complete turnoff for gum lovers. A dirty mouth is not the reason people chew gum.

1 Looks like something from alt.manholemouth.erotica.binaries.

2 This ad left me thinking about several things. None of them were gum.
