Some non-traditional projects were big winners for Hungry Man this year - in particular Sprite Shower, a life size soda fountain built on the beach in Rio for Ogilvy Sao Paolo. The live art installation was created by Gualter Pupo in conjunction with the Hungry Man *Project's team. It picked up three Cannes Lions; Gold in Promo & Activation, Silver in Outdoor and Bronze in Promo & Activation.
Another big award winner, at Cannes, D&AD and the British Arrows, was the British Heart Foundation's Vinnie, starring ex footballer and professional tough guy Vinnie Jones, directed by Wayne McClammy through Grey London, which lent a memorable face and tagline ("hard and fast") to a spot promoting CPR.
John Malkovich was another celebrity lending his face to a brand, making his U.S. spot debut in Bryan Buckley's Apple iPhone campaign promoting "Siri", through TBWA/Chiat/Day LA. Buckley also directed Ellen de Generes in a series of clever spots for JC Penney's relaunch campaign, through Brandadvisors.
Among other highlights, SpikeTV and direcctor Dave Laden took the traditional "comparison" ad into a new realm with "The Duffy Twins". The two and a half minute short featured a set of conjoined twins, only one of whom was able to watch Spike TV, making him an incredibly cool human being.
In the non-commercial field, Buckley's short film ASAD is one of 11 films shortlisted for Best Live Action Short at the Oscars. Buckley will next direct "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" with Reese Witherspoon in 2013. Among other directors, Neil Burger is in pre-production for "Divergent", starring Shailene Woodley, and Marcos Siega directed Fox's newest television series, "The Following" starring Kevin Bacon. Meanwhile, Hungry Man Brazil has closed its first deal to develop and produce a 13 episode TV Series for Brazilian cable TV group Globosat, set to air in April and supervised by Gualter Pupo.
