Fresh Coat

Oliviero Toscani would approve of this Gold Pencil winner by Lowe Bull Calvert Pace in Johannesburg. The ad, for a South African paint company, caused a bit of a stir back home by depicting a black man's hands circled around the pregnant belly of a white woman. While the other executions in the campaign are less controversial, they're equally beautiful, infused with subtle yet striking colors. In one, a woman sits under a hair dryer in a beauty parlor, bathed in the mellow pinks of late-afternoon light. In another a large man in black swim trunks sprawls out on a white beach.
