Xiu Xiu Sues Camel, Rolling Stone
'Indie Rock Universe' Spread Continues to Invite Lawsuits
Remember when we speculated that marketers wouldn't be taking advantage of indie bands if musicians could afford their own lawyers? Well that's all about to change.
According to The Daily Swarm, indie bands Xiu Xiu and Fucked Up have filed a class action suit against R. J. Reynolds and Wenner Media over the Camel-Rolling Stone spread that ran weeks ago. The musicians are suing on behalf of all 186 bands that were featured in the "Indie Rock Universe" section, and, according to the Swarm, damages could amount to $195.3 billion if maximum damages were awarded.
Eight states' attorneys general have filed charges against R. J. Reynolds because the alleged "advertorial" section contains cartoons, which are forbidden in tobacco advertising.
