Avon adds 3 venues to anti-cancer walk

Avon products is boosting to seven from four the number of "Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day" long-distance walking events.

This year's first Avon walk, to raise money to fight breast cancer, will be at a new site for the event, stepping off May 5 in Washington, D.C.

San Francisco and Boston also will be added to the list this year, joining Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. At each location, 2,000 people will walk 60 miles over three days, camping out each night.

Each participant is required to raise at least $1,800 from contributors; funds will go toward research, early detection and education about breast cancer through the Avon Foundation.


The company also continues its "Avon Breast Cancer Crusade," which began in 1993 and has raised a total of $55 million for breast cancer programs through a variety of fund-raising channels.

Avon launched the "3-Day" in 1998 with one event in Los Angeles, and remains the sole sponsor. During each walk, Avon will provide hot meals and refreshments, gear transport, hot showers, and medical services for walkers. Entertainment also is included each evening. All participants receive supplies of Avon brand insect spray and sunscreen during the walk.
