CBS MarketWatch is joining with CBS-TV's "The Early Show" for a "Survivor"-style promotion involving 14 investment clubs competing to create the largest virtual portfolio for a grand prize of $500,000. Each week the two worst-performing clubs face off on "The Early Show" and one is eliminated. Consumers can play along online (survivor.marketwatch.com) for prizes of up to $50,000. The promotion, handled in-house, runs through May 14.

Gear hopes to boost its April issue by harnessing Digital Conver-gence's CueCat technology allowing readers to link directly to marketers' Web sites by swiping a scanner over bar codes in magazine ads. A national radio promotion urges consumers to visit RadioShack to get the scanner and go to Gear's new Web site (gearmagazine.com). The radio station that drives the most traffic to the site between March 19 and April 9 wins trips to New York for one on-air personality and a listener to attend an event with an artist associated with co-sponsor Arista Records. The April issue of Bob Guccione Jr.'s Gear includes its "Search for the Perfect Woman Poll," urging readers to vote online for the qualities of the perfect woman. The promotion was handled in-house.
