AdMarket 50

The Dow Jones Industrial Average last week closed above its pre-Sept. 11 level after weeks of struggling back. Stocks in the AdMarket 50 also struggled, rallying after the ninth interest rate cut of the year Nov. 6, and then falling late in the week as investors cashed in their profits. Nine AdMarket stocks were down and 41 were up for the week.

Media and entertainment companies were mixed as quarterly reports continued to trickle in, most reflecting the ongoing slowdown in advertising. Fox Entertainment Group and its parent, News Corp., managed to eke out an up quarter in spite of low ad spending, while Walt Disney Co. could not fight off low advertising at ABC and weak attendance at theme parks. Investors boosted WPP Group, which gave up the fight to back out of a plan to acquire Tempus Group, and punished Interpublic Group of Cos. after Moody's Investors Services downgraded $2.7 billion worth of its debt securities.
