Nearly every story about David Jones harps on his former life as a tennis player. The self-effacing adman counters: "I played some tournaments ... [but it] didn't take long to realize that my future lay elsewhere."

Such as in advertising, where Mr. Jones became global CEO at Euro RSCG last year at age 38. He's thought to be the youngest leader of a global agency in the history of the business.

"Outrageous good luck is how I got to where I am," he quips. "It's a skill set I intend to use for the rest of my life."

Luck and talent.
