Hip, groovy Los Angeles might be the last place you'd expect to find a presence for Nascar. But the U.S.' second- hottest sport is moving beyond its "good ol' boy" image, in part thanks to its L.A. office and Phil Metz.

As manager of music and talent relations, Mr. Metz, 32, has lured such names as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Hilary Duff to either appear as honorary starters at races or perform before events.
