Samsung's delightful "Ostrich," directed by Matthijs van Heijingen was arguably the pinnacle of MJZ's reel--and one of the industry's finest works in 2017. The film saw the flightless bird transported into a new world via a flight simulator promoting the Galaxy 8 smartphone and VR technology.
Elsewhere, a few other spots achieved lift-off, notably Tom Kuntz's "Appocalypse" for Apple, a rip-roaring ride into a dystopian world devoid of apps. Kuntz also delivered a surreal campaign for Hyundai's "N" model with the tagline "Feel the Feeling," that spoofed luxury product advertising with bare-chested models with ripped torsos using "N" branded products.
Steve Ayson directed Kristen Wiig in various guises in Pizza Hut's new campaign by Droga5 and helmed Duracell's funny "Trust Is Power" spots through W&K.
In longer-form work, Dante Ariola brought delightfully dark touches to "The Neighborhood," a mini-horror flick for Xfinity via Goodby, Silverstein & Partners about a creepy mask that terrorizes the folks of one town.
New signings included "Antipodean" director Nick Ball and Michael Spiccia. But we'd like to see some female directors on this roster too.
