When Los Angeles-based Battery began in 2013, there was no financial backing.

Created on a whim by co-founders Anson Sowby, Chris Hepburn and Philip Khosid, Battery now has a six-person team and has expanded from initial client Ouya, a game console developer, to also work with clients like Warner Bros. and NBC Universal. Battery expects to bring in $6.5 million in revenue this year, a five-fold increase from 2014.

Battery still prides itself on three ideas: "simplicity," "fearless creativity" and "relentless will," Mr. Sowby said.
