It took but five days after closing his deal to acquire Weider Publications for David Pecker, Chairman-CEO of American Media, to make serious changes at the unit. On Jan. 28, he laid off approximately 20% of the company's 400 people in its Woodland Hill, CA offices. Among them were Weider's top management (on Jan. 29 newly former CEO Russell Denson's email was inoperative) and a big chunk of the company's online staff. Mr. Pecker said the layoffs were a function of winnowing out departments that duplicated American Media infrastructure, like finance and distribution, and added there was "no intent of moving any people" from sunny SoCal, save for a handful who were offered jobs at American Media's Florida home.
