Cover Story: Editors bet Midler is winning subject

While no one knows how her new TV show "Bette" will ultimately fare, Bette Midler came out the winner in October's newsstand popularity poll, scoring 7.5 points on magazine covers, including Good Housekeeping, TV Guide and Us Weekly.

"Charlie's Angels" star Cameron Diaz came in second with 7 points; while she flew solo on the cover of Harper's Bazaar, the actress shared several covers with her film co-stars Drew Barrymore (tied for fourth place), and Lucy Liu, who missed the top 10. Third place went to Meg Ryan, whose upcoming film and recent breakup with Dennis Quaid garnered her 6.5 points. "Almost Famous" star Kate Hudson shared the tie for fourth with 5 points, while Ben Affleck and Hillary Clinton tied for sixth with 4 points. "Will & Grace" star Debra Messing grabbed eighth place with 3.5 points. Ninth place drew nine contenders with 3 points apiece, including Olympian Marion Jones.M
