This month Cover Story meditates upon the story of Angelina Jolie: Those lips. Those thighs. Those teeth. Those knife-scars. That marriage. The queasy incident with her brother at the Academy Awards ... oops, we've done written ourselves the 473rd version of the Angelina Jolie Feature! Yes, everyone's favorite "crazy"-celeb (have we used up all the cliches yet?) cum-empowered-bimbo Lara Croft narrowly nosed out two Cover Story perennials to claim June's crown. (Speaking of noses, the Rolling Stone shot of the horse nuzzling nearby two of Ms. Jolie's key assets as she blissfully throws her head back rang the bell on even Cover Story's notoriously tough-to-budge gross-o-meter; for further study we request-nay, demand-Wenner Media send along any relevant outtakes.) In second place with seven points-a mere half-point behind Ms. Jolie-is Julia Roberts, who, before her recent breakup with leading man Benjamin Bratt, did little newsworthy other than being Julia Roberts, and apparently that's enough. Tying for third is the indefatigable Jennifer Lopez-who, to the best of Cover Story's knowledge, did not co-sponsor any congressional legislation this month-and uber-model Gisele Bundchen, who graced the covers of Harper's Bazaar and Vogue.
Cover Story is Ad Age's monthly rankings of celebrities' popularity as reflected by their appearances on the covers of more than 30 of the nation's leading publications.
