Volkswagen of America: "Road Signs" (campaign)

Del Rivero Messianu DDB, Coral Gables, Fla.

Executive creative director: Luis Miguel Messianu

Creative director: Jose Luis Villa

Associate CD: Monica Marulanda

Copywriter: Christian Reslen

In a charming, deceptively simple reversal of the way car advertising is usually done, a tiny Volkswagen Jetta sits in the lower left-hand corner of the ad, while road signs-and their fanciful reactions to the Jetta-fill the page.

In "Nice Body," the little white man in the "Walk/Don't walk" box leans impossibly out to glimpse the Jetta below him. In another execution, the red "Don't walk" box is complemented by the word "Run!" and the brief explanation: "Only $199 a month."

Finally, two stick figures are blown off their traffic sign by the force of the Jetta 1.8 Turbo in "What Da'?"

Volkswagen of America: "Ad Warranty"

Del Rivero Messianu DDB, Coral Gables, Fla.

Executive creative director: Luis Miguel Messianu

Creative director: Jose Luis Villa

Art director: Marcos Macias

Copywriter: Christian Reslen

Volkswagen's warranty protects your automobile against everything, promises the text below the picture of the Jetta parked on the stylish suburban Florida street.

But wait! A dog is peeing against the car's tire, prompting the addition of two short, parenthetical words toward the bottom of the ad: ("Well, almost").

Arteaga & Arteaga/public service:

"Frozen Margarita"

Arteaga & Arteaga, Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico

Art director: Jose Rios

Copywriter: Odaly Santiago

This Puerto Rican agency gives a new twist to the standard don't-drink-and-drive message. The image links the common drink order with the equally cold morgue that receives a young victim of a traffic accident.
