Despite having spent her young career in adland, Kristin Maverick may in fact be more a fixture in New York's burgeoning tech scene than on Madison Avenue.
With experience over the last several years in tech public relations and handling social media for General Electric, Mattel's Barbie and General Mills, Ms. Maverick is the rare talent fluent in both brands and startups.
As employee No. 9 at boutique agency Carrot Creative, Ms. Maverick was instrumental in planning the first Digital Dumbo meetups in Brooklyn with Digital Dumbo chief executive Andrew Zarick. Those would form the organization that 's largely responsible for bringing together the startups and digital agencies that have sprouted in the Brooklyn neighborhood and come to symbolize the innovation happening off the beaten path in the industry.
Despite her ties to the startup world, she's not above poking fun at it and the industry's obsession with all that 's new and popular. Her site IsPinterest.com is surely a testament: Type in "Is Pinterest the next Facebook, sliced bread or printing press" and you'll get a firm "No!" It's just a virtual pinboard.
What would be your dream vacation spot?
Anywhere with a beach chair and a connecting spa. I'm not picky.
What is your favorite book?
Tina Fey's "Bossypants." The woman is a genius and the story of her success is inspirational and hilarious.
What is a little-known fact about yourself?
I was blonde for six months of my life. Like, frosted blonde tips. It was horrible and I am never going back. It looks great on some people. I am not one of them.
If I wasn't doing this job, I'd be ...
Something Broadway-related. I see at least one show per month and I'm really just in love with that industry.
