Michel Gondry, Partizan

Published on .

It's no wonder the name Michel Gondry has become synonymous with "creativity." The French auteur has been an influential force in every corner of the film and video world for the past 20 years and that influence is only growing. He created fantasies with romantic tableaux in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, injected fever dreams into the mind blowing The Science of Sleep (which spawned a Deitch Projects Gallery exhibit) and achieved understated, documentary-style for Dave Chappelle's Block Party. Recently, he's snapped back to sci-fi with upcoming films like Be Kind Rewind and 2009's Master of Space and Time. Meanwhile, he's even found time so solve a Rubik's Cube on YouTube with his feet (and later, with his nose). He also appeared, as himself, in a kaleidoscopic HP "The Computer is Personal Again" spot directed by his brother, Olivier, and lensed a new TV commercial for Motorola. With a creative path that's hard to pinpoint and output that's even harder to predict, this Versailles-born whiz continues to tap into his subconscious mind while arousing ours in the process. (KA)
