The Book Nook

Politicized design is the new world order of the day in Empire, a stimulating $19.95 paperback from Princeton Architectural Press. As an Art Spiegelman blurb on the back cover goes, "Behold, Empire: proof positive that when governments go bad, art gets good!," while Jules Feiffer calls it "a book of graphic rage." Empire, aka Nozone IX, is the first book based on the alternative political graphic magazine Nozone, published by Nicholas Blechman, a principal at New York's Knickerbocker Design, and the editor of this volume. Designers and cartoonists in Empire include Charles S. Anderson, Michael Bierut, Art Chantry, Seymour Chwast, Luba Lukova, Christoph Niemann, Stefan Sagmeister, Paul Sahre and Ward Sutton.
