Dumb Luck is the title of Gary Baseman's fabulous $40 hardcover career retrospective, new from Chronicle Books (www.chroniclebooks.com), though Smart Talent would probably be more to the point. The onetime "underground illustrator" now has his hand in so many visual arts/entertainment pies, including the TV show and movie Teacher's Pet, it's no wonder he invented the notion of Pervasive Art. "I want to create work that breaks the boundaries and divisions between fine art and mass media," he says. "Work that can find meaning with an audience when it's in an art gallery, or in a publication, or TV or film, or even in the form of consumer products. I love the challenge of keeping one's artistic vision, meaning and integrity while infusing them into a new medium." This book is so cool it just makes us wanna go out and maim a bunny.
