The DVD Nook

Palm Pictures' Directors Label DVDs, featuring the work of Michel Gondry, Chris Cunningham and Spike Jonze, are a marketing brainstorm-not coincidentally, the ever-inspired Jonze is a co-founder of Directors Label-positing music video as an art form of archival significance. Which it certainly is, when talents of this caliber are doing the clipwork. The Cunningham entry may be a touch on the skimpy side, though its content is anything but; however the double-sided Gondry and Jonze discs, loaded with music videos, commentaries and assorted rarities, are rich and frequently revelatory, besides being handy compilations of some of the best work in the business. As if that weren't enough, all the titles come with well-designed and surprisingly hefty illustrated booklets. Palm previously put out a Hype Williams video compilation, and more Directors Label titles are expected next year. High fives all around.
