In the new movie "Life in a Day" (screenplay by Aaron Sorkin), PayPal employees Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim -- played by , respectively, Andrew McCarthy, Jet Li and Dominic Cooper -- each have their hearts broken by sassy, beautiful Jenny (Mila Kunis). Since they know she loves the TV show "America's Funniest Home Videos," they each decide that they're going to win her back by creating the internet version of "AFHV." At first they're rivals, but then they realize that if they team up, they have a better chance of fending off the scheming Winklevoss twins, who are working on a competing project called UsTube (which shows nothing but homoerotic videos of the twins at rowing competitions). And so YouTube is born!
And then Lance Bass shows up... and then...
Oh, never mind. Here's the real plot (such that it is ) of "Life in a Day," which you might remember from last year when the call for participation went out:
What happens when you send a request out to the world to chronicle, via video, a single day on Earth? You get 80,000 submissions and 4,500 hours of footage from 192 countries. Producer Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald took this raw material -- all shot on July 24, 2010 -- and created "Life in a Day," a groundbreaking, feature-length documentary that portrays this kaleidoscope of images we call life.
It opens in Chicago, Los Angles, New York, San Francisco, Santa Monica and Seattle today, and in other cities across the U.S. on successive Fridays throughout the summer (see youtube.com/lifeinaday for the complete list so far). Entertainment Weekly gives it a B+ and calls it "our equivalent of that '80s art-film kaleidoscope 'Koyaanisqatsi.'" Which means maybe bring some aspirin.
