A German grandpa took the internet by storm, and with it, the first spot in the Viral Video Chart. The Christmas spot for German supermarket chain Edeka was in everyone's feed last week, reminding families everywhere to make an effort to spend some time with their loved ones this holiday season. The spot, called "#heimkommen" ("Coming Home") garnered almost 33.5 million views. See the spot's coverage on Creativity.
Other newcomers to the chart are "Puppyhood 2," a BuzzFeed-Purina collaboration that follows the "Puppyhood" campaign from June. The hilarious video shows a man and his puppy as they prepare for a date with a girl he met at a grocery store and snagged the third place with 11.8 million views. Facebook landed on the chart with a new video, "Homeless in Seattle," which highlights a local architect's efforts to help the homeless by way of a Facebook page. The clip won the social network the fourth spot in the chart.
Pepsi's video announcing Coldplay as the Super Bowl's halftime show and Singapore Airlines with an incredibly detailed paper plane are also other viral highlights. Samsung's "Turn the Bezel" and Duracell's "Star Wars" tie-in spot were the only two videos from last week that managed to secure a spot. See the full chart below.
Ad Age's Viral Video Chart, powered by Visible Measures, focuses on brand-driven social video ad campaigns. Each campaign is measured by True Reach, an MRC accredited metric that includes views from brand-driven and audience-driven social video clips. The data are compiled using the patented Visible Measures platform, a constantly growing repository of analytic data on hundreds of millions of videos tracked across hundreds of online video destinations.
Note: This analysis does not include Visible Measures' paid-placement (e.g., overlays; pre-, mid-, and post-roll) performance data or video views on private sites. This chart does not include movie trailers, video game campaigns, TV show, or media network promotions. View counts are incremental by week.
