Is it a trailer? Is it a commercial? It's both! This week's top viral video is a curious mix of a Kia ad featuring tennis player Rafael Nadal as a mutant with an extrapowerful right arm, and a trailer for the upcoming "X-Men" sequel, with a dash of the Australian Open. The tie-in shot to number one on our Visible Measures Viral Chart, with 15.3 million views, covering the seven days up to Sunday, after being number three last week.
A second movie tie-in also made it near the top of the chart this week. We development platform Wix.com's Super Bowl's teaser feature characters from "Kung Fu Panda 3," to be released this Friday in theaters, trying to draw customers to a noodle shop in outrageous ways, until they learn that all they need to do is create a website. The campaign has garnered over 11 million views this week, but the Super Bowl ad, bankrolled by Wix, is a windfall for the movie.
Actual movie trailers are excluded from these rankings, partly because they would often overrun the chart.
Other highlights this week were a new Walmart effort announcing that the retail chain is increasing its wages, which garnered 10.5 million views, and the comebacks of Geico's "Unskippable" campaign (which Ad Age just awarded Campaign of the Year honors for 2015) and Olay's "What's Your Age Giveaway?"
Ad Age's Viral Video Chart, powered by Visible Measures, focuses on brand-driven social video ad campaigns. Each campaign is measured by True Reach, an MRC accredited metric that includes views from brand-driven and audience-driven social video clips. The data are compiled using the patented Visible Measures platform, a constantly growing repository of analytic data on hundreds of millions of videos tracked across hundreds of online video destinations.
Note: This analysis includes all publicly available video views on branded video content. This chart does not include movie trailers, video game campaigns, TV show, or television network promotions. View counts are incremental by week.
**Indicates percent change in views compared with the same period the week before.
