Samsung's Jay-Z promotion may be getting more press, but the company's recent video collaboration with Grammy-winning R&B singer Usher has generated almost three times more online video views, earning it the top spot on this week's Viral Video Chart.
Released online at 11 p.m. last Thursday, the two and half minute Samsung-Usher spot generated 14 million online views by the end of the week and another seven million so far this week for 21 million total, according to Visible Measures. Jay-Z's three minute, Samsung Galaxy smartphone-branded commercial for his upcoming album "Magna Carta Holy Grail" has been viewed 7.7 million times to date.
The Usher video had fewer Facebook shares than the Jay-Z video, however, suggesting the Usher video is receiving less organic passalong and is likely benefiting from "being heavily promoted" online, Visible Measures analyst Jeanne Yeh said.
The Usher commercial includes his new single "Looking 4 Myself" and features him using Samsung's smart TV technology in a fight sequence with his doppelganger that Usher, in an interview, called reminiscent of films such as "Chronicle," "Hancock" and "The Matrix."
Usher said his fans see a fit with Samsung.
"Being forward thinking and progressive in my creative process is no different than what Samsung's doing with its technology," Usher said. "I'm very selective and cognizant of the fact that I have an audience and they're not idiots. They know if something is a payout or if its a product you stand behind. And I stand behind this."
