Facebook's Solar Airplane Campaign Soars to Number One on Viral Video Chart

By Published on .

Facebook has the No. 1 viral video spot this week with its first successful launch of Aquila, a solar airplane that stays in the air for months to bring internet access to remote locations. The video had more than 17 milllion views last week.

This week's viral video chart is otherwise dominated by athletes as they gear up for the Rio 2016 Olympics. Kia's new video is in the No. 2 spot with 15.5 million views of professional surfer Slade Prestwich catching big waves. In the No. 4 spot, Gillette's "Perfect Isn't Pretty" shows athletes Neymar Jr., Ning Zetao, Ashton Eaton and Andy Tennant training for the Olympics while Sia sings a custom tune.

Samsung's "The Chant" video returns to this week's chart. It is a celebration of South Sudan's first Olympic team with athlete Margret Rumat Rumat Hassan. A second Samsung video holds the No. 5 spot. It is a debut of an Olympic Games Limited Edition of Samsung Galaxy S7. In seventh place, Team Visa Olympians travel to Rio for the Olympics swiping and waving their credit cards with ease in a Visa spot.

Ad Age's Viral Video Chart, powered by Visible Measures, focuses on brand-driven social video ad campaigns. Each campaign is measured by True Reach, an MRC accredited metric that includes views from brand-driven and audience-driven social video clips. The data are compiled using the patented Visible Measures platform, a constantly growing repository of analytic data on hundreds of millions of videos tracked across hundreds of online video destinations.

Note: This analysis includes all publicly available video views on branded video content. This chart does not include movie trailers, video game campaigns, TV show, or television network promotions. View counts are incremental by week.

**Indicates percent change in views compared with the same period the week before.
