Viacom vet vamooses after company splits

More change is afoot at the new Viacom as 20-year MTV veteran Herb Scannell, who was vice chairman of MTV Networks and president of Nickelodeon, left to "pursue other business opportunities." The resignation prompted a reorganization that placed Nickelodeon and its stable of smaller cable networks, Nick at Night and Nickelodeon's magazine and digital businesses under the newly formed MTV Networks Kids & Family Group, Cyma Zarghami, formerly president of Nickelodeon Television. The reorganization also sent TV Land over the Spike TV and Comedy Central division, led by Doug Herzog. The separation of Nick at Nite and TV Land reverses a move made in late 2001 that combined the two networks. Lee Jeans taps Arnold for $30 million account

VF Corp.'s Lee Jeans named Havas' Arnold Worldwide, New York, its creative agency of record. Arnold bested Omnicom Group's DDB and Interpublic Group of Cos.' Lowe, both in New York, in the review. Last fall, Publicis Groupe's Fallon Worldwide, Minneapolis, resigned the account after a 19-year run in which it created the famous Buddy Lee campaign. Media planning and buying for Lee will be handled by WPP Group's Mediaedge:cia, New York, which won consolidated planning and buying duties for VF in the fall.

Study links alcohol marketing, drinking levels

A study funded by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism linked exposure to alcoholic beverage marketing to drinking levels among teenagers and adults. The study, which appeared in the January issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, said people aged 15 to 26 who saw more alcoholic beverage ads on average drank more than their peers in markets where there was little alcoholic beverage marketing. `CMO' closes its doors; parent co. cuts staff 10%

CMO Magazine, the title from CXO Media aimed at marketing executives, is shutting down after 15 months in business. Michael Friedenberg, president-CEO, CXO, in a statement said the magazine could not survive as is. "Although CMO received numerous awards and accolades, the marketplace is not of the size and scale to support the business in its present format," said Mr. Friedenberg.
