Calif. Vintners start Japanese Web site

By Published on .

[st. helena, calif.] California's Napa Valley Vintners organization this month moves to plant a stake in the increasingly competitive global wine market with the launch of its first foreign language Web site, in Japanese. The vintners' group, which includes labels such as Trinchero Family Estates and Clos du Val Wine Co., plans wine Web sites in German and other languages later this year. Jay Schuppert, president of Cuvaison Winery and chair of the vintners' international committee, said the group started with Japan because the Japanese are beginning to enjoy the taste of wine and a more emotional connection with the product. The vintners also are eyeing China. "There are 50 million people in China with the disposable income to purchase Napa Valley wine," Mr. Schuppert said.
