Denmark ends ban on OTC drug ads

By Published on .

[Copenhagen] Denmark passed a law ending the country's ban on advertising over-the-counter drugs on TV. Welcoming the change, Denmark's Federation of Advertisers forecast a 5% increase in ad spending in Denmark this year and a 10% jump in 2004 due to new drug advertising. Nycomed Pharma, a Copenhagen-based bio-pharma products group, was the first to test the new OTC legislation, with a commercial for local analgesic Kodimagnyl on Danish TV. OTC ads must contain a reference to a page on Text TV where further information on products is available. In another change, drug marketers are allowed to sponsor TV programs as long as they are not used to promote non-OTC, prescription drugs to the public.
