VW invites 6 shops to pitch China work

By Published on .

[Beijing] China's biggest carmaker, Volkswagen, met with six agencies last week in the initial stage of a pitch for its first national brand campaign in mainland China. Pitching are Omnicom Group's DDB Worldwide and BBDO Worldwide; Grey Global Group's Grey Worldwide; Publicis Groupe's Saatchi & Saatchi; WPP Group's Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide; and local shop DMG. A decision isn't expected until mid-2004. Billings were not disclosed. "They asked agencies to suggest how much they should spend," said one agency executive who took part. The pitch will not affect VW's existing agency relationships in China through two joint ventures with local partners. Shanghai VW manufactures Santana, Passat, Golf and Polo models, handled by Ogilvy and Grey. FAW-VW produces the Jetta, Audi and Bora models, with all advertising handled by DMG.
