[New York] A cheeky campaign at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival last June by WPP Group's Wunderman
, aimed at recruiting high-caliber, Lions-winning creatives to the direct response agency, has reeled in a winner. Jon Williams, Publicis Dialog's U.K. creative director, won the requisite gold Lion and many other prizes for creating last year's Hype gallery to make HP printers trendy among young graphic designers and other creatives. They were invited to submit original works of computer-generated art containing the letters "H" and "P" that were displayed both online and printed out or projected using HP equipment in a gallery. Mr. Williams is joining Wunderman London as U.K. online creative director. What really "burned a hole in my mind" regarding Wunderman, said Mr. Williams, were the print ads and posters festooned around Cannes with lines such as, "If you can't beat `em, hire `em," that encouraged Lion winners to call Wunderman CEO Daniel Morel directly. "I was impressed that from the top down, there's a commitment to bring in top talent," said Mr. Williams, who starts his new job Feb. 1. Mr. Morel said bringing Mr. Williams onboard "fulfills the campaign's objectives" though he admits that one ad targeted at the Cyber Grand Prix winner whose copy read, "We're only expecting one response to this ad," didn't get one. He hasn't heard from that winner, independent agency Host, Sydney, Australia.
