[Seoul] South Korea's third-largest mobile phone maker, Pantech Co., is splitting its estimated $50 million global advertising and media account between two Interpublic Group of Cos. agencies, McCann Erickson
Worldwide and Foote Cone & Belding Worldwide. McCann is likely to get most of the business, but FCB will keep a few markets like Russia, where the agency has a strong relationship with Pantech. Incumbents include WPP Group's JWT
in Mexico and Brazil and Havas-owned Euro RSCG in China. The appointment follows a pitch against Publicis Groupe's Leo Burnett
Worldwide, Omnicom Group's BBDO
Worldwide and Korean agency Diamond Ad, majority-owned by WPP. After building up $3 billion in sales in less developed markets, Pantech hopes to take on cellphone giants like Motorola and Nokia in Europe and North America. The company is also investing in new features, like the first fingerprint recognition mobile phone handset, a James Bond-like model that securely controls personalized key entries with a registered fingerprint.
