Writers Strike Hinges on Splitting New Media Pie

The Writers Guild of America is on strike after negotiations with television producers over a new contract crumbled. Sticking point: The WGA says producers won’t budge on giving the unions jurisdiction over writing for new media, the New York Times reports. The producers also are trying to stick the union with the same revenue rate for downloaded shows and movies as the writers get for DVDs, which the WGA wishes it hadn’t agreed to two decades ago.
