Wal-Mart Stores posted a 3.5% gain in same-store sales in March, below the 5.5% sales growth posted a year ago, but better than the 1.7% combined gain for a 78-company retail index. March was the 11th straight month of smaller same-store sales gains for the 78-company measure. The difficult economy may benefit Wal-Mart as shoppers new to Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores seek out the retailer to stretch their budgets. In trading April 12, Wal-Mart closed at $49.70, off 1.19% for the week.
