U.S. ad agency employment hit a record 199,200 in December-the same month measured ad spending marked its first dip in years. Ad spending then fell sharply in January. Agencies reacted to the slowdown with cuts in January and in February, when agency employment stood at 197,800. But there is consolation. Media and agency spending are far above their early `90s funk.
