Why should my company participate?

Inclusion in the survey can be a tool to retain and attract employees, differentiate your company to prospective clients, and reinforce your standing with existing clients and employees. The honorees will be celebrated in Ad Age—both in print and online.

When is the registration deadline?

Monday, August 18 at 5 p.m. EST.

What is the process once we register?

Once you submit your registration fee, you will receive an email with a link to “Next Steps.” Clicking that link will take you to a page to fill out some additional information with our research partner, Buck Consultants.

At that time, you will designate a primary contact who will receive the employer survey by e-mail. That survey takes about 30 minutes to complete and is due Sept. 7. Employers will submit employee e-mail addresses along with their completed employer survey. Employees will subsequently receive a survey by e-mail, which they will complete using a secure web-based platform. That survey takes about five minutes, and employees are given three weeks to complete it. The evaluation process is based solely on the two surveys—there are no site visits or telephone interviews.

How will Ad Age choose its Best Places to Work?

The list will be determined by the results of two surveys (See “What is the process once we register?”). A representative from each company will complete a survey detailing hiring practices, benefits and pay. A separate survey will be sent to all company employees via e-mail. The surveys will be conducted by Ad Age’s research partner, Buck Consultants LLC.

Should there be one nomination on behalf of our company, or should multiple employees nominate our company?

We are looking for a single entry, one per employer. When applying, each company agrees to participate fully in the survey process. Therefore, the application should be submitted by someone within the company who has the authority to make that commitment.

Who at my company should apply to fill out the employer survey?

The registration form should be completed by someone with the authority to commit to the contest, oversee the process and ensure follow-through. The person will be responsible for completing the employer survey, which requires knowledge about your company’s hiring, compensation and benefits practices. Additionally, the person will be responsible for providing Buck Consultants (our partner in Best Places to Work) with employees' e-mail addresses, for distribution of the employee survey.

How will you survey our employees?

The surveys will be conducted using a secure web-based platform. Companies are required to submit the e-mail addresses of employees by Sept. 10, 2014. Further instructions for submitting a spreadsheet of all employees' email addresses will be provided later in the process.

Are there guidelines for submitting employee email addresses? Do we submit all addresses?

Submit e-mail addresses for all regular, full-time U.S. employees. We survey all employees, but require a minimum sample size, depending on how many total employees your firm has.

Can we see the survey questions in advance?

We have posted a sample of the employer survey here and the employee survey here.

How long will it take employees to complete the employee survey?

Only five minutes.

How many employees does my company need to have to be eligible?

Companies must have at least 40 full-time employees working in the U.S. as of June 1, 2014. We love small agencies and firms, but need to ensure a large enough sample size for the employee survey to be statistically accurate.

Is it OK if my company is headquartered outside of the U.S.?

Yes, but the company must have an office in the U.S. with at least 40 full-time employees working locally.

When are the surveys due?

Employer surveys are due on Sept. 7, 2014. Surveys for your employees—to be sent out on Sept. 8, 2014—are also due on Oct. 24, 2014.

Does my company have to pay anything or advertise with Ad Age to be on this list?

There is a $200 entry fee, which does not guarantee inclusion on the list of Best Places to Work. The results will be tabulated independently by our research partner, Buck Consultants.

Who will I be competing against?

We will highlight top employers in three categories: Agencies, tech firms and media companies. You’ll need to designate your company in one area, based on your primary business. Ad Age will verify that your designation is correct.

Will we get to see the results of the surveys?

Aggregated results will be given to all participants. Post-publication, Buck Consultants will also make a more detailed report available for a fee. The aggregated report shows results from all participating companies, and the detailed report shows how your company specifically compares to others in your sector.

Will our company be listed even if we don't score highly?

Only the top-ranked companies will be named publicly in Ad Age.
