Well, the real check-in news of the week in Foursquare-land was its first "promoted venue" tie-in with the Super Bowl. More than 200,000 people checked-in at the big game with the opportunity to earn a Steelers or Packers badge for "shouting" your support for one of the teams.

Two surveys paint a hopeful picture for ad spending in 2011. Strata's fourth-quarter survey of media buyers found just over half of media buyers predicting an increase in business -- the highest percent since the software provider for media buyers began the surveying its clients in 2008. Meanwhile, Alterian's annual survey of agencies, marketers and marketing service providers found 49% predicting that marketing expenditures were likely to increase slightly (5%-25%) and 9% predicting an increase of 25% or more.

But in the social-media world we have sentiment analysis in real time to shade in some of the gray areas for us. NetBase did some research for us comparing the recent high-profile logo changes at Gap and Starbucks. Here's what they found.

Starbucks is certainly a place visited daily and habitually by many coffee-chugging check-in-ers (checkers-in?). It takes a little dip on the weekends but overall everyday check-ins are pretty flat. That's not so at retailers such as Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Ikea and Costco, all of whom have fairly similar patterns to their daily totals.
