Why is it that so many bleeding-edge, ultra-cool websites -- products in and of themselves -- are designed to be invisible to search engines and ultimately potential customers?

You have an "About Us" page on your website, right? And you always put one on client sites you build, right? I've always done that too. But no more. Let's ban "About Us" pages!

Chris Anderson, author of "The Long Tail," is working on his new book in which he explores the notion of "free." Rather than hole himself up in a cabin somewhere while writing, he uses his blog to test out content, source external perspectives and even ask for a little help.

I've become much more cognizant of marketing promotions lately and I've found myself more than once asking, "That's an interesting tactic, but where's the strategy?"

I like Chrome because it's simple, fast and AdAge.com looks great in it. But today when I went to re-watch part of last night's VP debate to catch Joe Biden's reference to the "Bosniaks" (a real term for Bosnian Muslims, it turns out!), I couldn't get past the two-second mark in the video. It played two seconds and froze. What gives?

According to Visible Measures, which charts online video viewing trends and has measured the videos associated with Microsoft's $300 million ad campaign, the Seinfeld/Gates ads are squashing the "I'm a PC" ads by a margin of 4.3 million viral video views. A House inquiry forced Silicon Valley-based NebuAd to shelve its plans to help ISPs track their users and serve targeted advertising. But that's not going to stop U.K.-based Phorm, which has similar ambitions, from attempting a launch in the U.S.

Once upon a time -- say, 2002 -- digital spending was a negligible proportion of total marketing budgets and we lived in a world where few marketers would dare go "beyond the banner." Fast forward to 2008 and in some cases we have the opposite problem. Digital spending is still too low, but in the spirit of wanting to appear current some marketers have rushed to embrace any and every new digital tactic on the horizon.

CTIA for me was as much work as it was a checkup on the mobile industry at large, and I'm happy to report -- after spending 72 hours in San Francisco -- that for the first time I saw nothing that truly surprised me, give or take a few products. And this was a good thing.

With alarming regularity, most recently Wednesday, I get inquiries from companies who want me to create a blog for them -- usually for the CEO. And nine out of ten times, I talk them out of it.

At today's Web 2.0 conference in New York, Brooklyn-based start-up Drop.io and online ad agency Organic are unveiling technology they created through collaboration -- a riff on Drop.io's private file-sharing service. The new tool lets users assign content a location and create rules that the content may only be accessed from that location. Drop.io service lets users share e-mails, links and multimedia with a predefined group of contacts. This new service allows users to also add a predefined location in which to share files. Think of it as mobile social sharing with a GPS twist.
