hat's the perfect formula for summertime entertainment that's so cool that it's too hot to miss? Try mixing one part of the summer's must-see awards show; blend in a literal laugh riot of comedy from the country's best comedians; and stir in a heaping helping of the best in movies and music shows. Shake well and indulge this slamming recipe of sensational summer programming on BET. Setting off the summer is the "2004 BET Awards," once again rolling out from Hollywood's Kodak Theatre. The show is the highest-rated awards program among African-American households (30.0 Nielsen rating), easily topping the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, Essence Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards.

Expanding to three hours and premiering June 29, BET unleashes a salute to superlative performances in music, sports and acting wrapped around sizzling on-stage performances and hosted by actress and comedian Mo'Nique. Crowning the showcase will be the bestowing of BET's Lifetime Achievement Award on the legendary Isley Brothers, as well as the network's distinguished Humanitarian Award on activist, actor and philanthropist Danny Glover.

The '04 awards party gets started with a star-studded red carpet arrival of award nominees, performers and celebrities outside the Kodak Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard. BET will televise a special live telecast of its top-rated music video show "106 & Park," "Live from the Red Carpet," before the awards show takes center stage.

The rest of the summer keeps the momentum rolling with a red-hot lineup including:

More laughs from top comedians at the all-new "Club Comic View,"

with host J. Anthony Brown and a slammin' new nightclub scene; and a brand new spin on comedy as big name comedians get their own one-hour standup specials each week on "Club Comic View Presents";

More "Black Star Cinema," showcasing a stellar menu of Black films three nights a week with such summertime premieres as "Bojangles," a biography of William "Bojangles" Robinson starring the late Gregory Hines that explores the entertainer's rise to Hollywood stardom over racial barriers; and "The Five Heartbeats," a poignant story of five young Black men who rocket from amateur vocal group to music sensations while battling racism, greed and personal conflict;

Mega-satisfaction for music fans led by "106 & Park," television's top-rated music video countdown show; "Rap City: Tha' Bassment," true to the rap nation as the champion of hip-hop; and "The Center," mixing music and entertainment news.

BET's commitment to the community continues to build as the network focuses news and public affairs resources on:

Special coverage by "BET Nightly News" of this summer's Democratic and Republican National Conventions as a prelude the 2004 Presidential election;

"BET Open Mic" with a special town hall dialogue in June focusing on HIV/ AIDS issues in observance of National HIV Testing Day;

Programming vignettes encouraging exercise and healthy eating as part of A Healthy BET, the network's partnership with General Mills to fight obesity among African Americans.
