About 214 million Chinese in more than 100 million families watched the annual Spring Festival evening gala broadcast live on China Central Television (CCTV), giving it an audience share of 68.16%. The variety show of dances, songs and short comedies aired from 8 p.m. on Feb. 6, the eve of the Lunar New Year, to 1 a.m. the next day.

It started in the 1980s and remains popular, particularly among older consumers in northern and eastern China. Shandong Province had the highest audience ratings among all monitored regions this year, while the booming province of Guangdong in southern China posted the lowest ratings.
