Beijing Olympics Earn China $146 M in Operating Profit

By Published on .

BEIJING (AdAgeChina.com) -- China made over one billion RMB, or $146 million, from the 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing in August 2008, according to the country's National Audit Office, more than twice the previous estimate.

Advertisers contributed much of the revenue; the Beijing Olympic organizing committee sold sponsorships to dozens of companies at the local, regional and national level, while the International Organizing Committee signed up 12 global sponsors. Revenue also came in from the sale of broadcasting rights, merchandise and 6.46 million tickets.

The 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games made $223 million in profit, according to earlier media reports, and the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney $167 million.
