Olympic Games Spur Interest In Tourism To China

By Published on .

The 2008 Olympic Games may boost tourism to China. In a 16-country online survey conducted before the games started last month, 45% of respondents said they intend to travel to mainland China one day. Interest rose to 51% following the closing ceremony. Those who claimed to have no interest in visiting China dropped from one-third to around a quarter.

Interest to visit China was highest in Hong Kong and Singapore (86%), India (80%), Mexico (72%), Taiwan and South African (69%) and South Korea (66%). China will be the world's largest tourist destination in 12 years, receiving 137 million overseas tourists in 2020, according to the World Tourism Organization. By that year, it will also generate 100 million outbound tourists.
